Flame Mahogany

Thomas Sheraton - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany."

The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency sideboards are characterised by neoclassical proportions, symmetry, and smooth curved or bow-fronted elevations inspired by early nineteenth-century British architecture. They frequently feature high-grade wood veneers, delicate stringing, and tapered or turned legs.

Primary woods included solid mahogany and highly figured flame mahogany veneers, often accented with ebony or satinwood inlays. Drawer linings were typically constructed from pine or oak, fitted with cast brass handles and escutcheons.

Authentic period sideboards display hand-cut dovetail joints, irregular hand-planed secondary timbers, and genuine natural patination around wear points. Hardware from the era will often exhibit original cast marks or subtle asymmetries.

Position the piece as a central focal point along a dining room or hallway wall, balanced with minimalist contemporary artwork or a large framed mirror above. The deep timber tones contrast effectively with contemporary muted paint palettes.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft, dry cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the veneer from drying or fading.
