19th Century William IV Period Mahogany Inlay Sideboard, C1830

19th century
Description

A Fine William IV Period Mahogany and Ebony Stringing Breakfront Sideboard, Scotland, circa 1830

A superb early 19th-century William IV period figured mahogany and cross banded ebony inlaid breakfront sideboard of excellent quality, constructed throughout from well chosen timbers and retaining a rich, original colour and patina.

The sophisticated shaped breakfront top is simply and elegantly. Below is a central long frieze drawer, cross banded and outlined with ebony stringing and fitted with a pair of turned mahogany knob handles, over a further concave pull out linnen drawer with faux quilling or tambour on the facing.

These central drawers are framed by out stepped spiral turned reeded pilasters, which transition into ring turned and reeded supports, terminating in finely turned feet. To the left is a full height mahogany cross banded ebony inlaid cupboard door; to the right, a full height fitted mahogany cross banded ebony inlaid cellarette drawer, ideal for bottle storage. These end sections are again flanked by columned legs, giving the piece a balanced and architectural presence. Standing on six elegantly tapered, reeded mahogany legs, this sideboard displays an outstanding depth of colour and a warm, glowing patina that has developed over two centuries. Its generous proportions, refined styling, and superior timber quality strongly suggest it was a special commission.

Retaining its original keys and working locks and remaining in largely untouched condition, this sideboard is sturdy, practical, and ready for use. It is both a testament to exceptional late Georgian craftsmanship and a striking focal point for any interior seeking the authentic English country house look.

William IV furniture, dating from 1830 to 1837, bridges the Regency and Victorian eras. It is defined by substantial proportions, architectural restraint, rich mahogany timbers, reeded or fluted turned legs, and fine decorative line inlay.

High-quality 19th-century sideboards were predominantly constructed using solid mahogany and flame mahogany veneers over oak or pine carcass wood, often incorporating brass lock mechanisms and decorative string inlay.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, secondary timbers such as oak or deal for internal linings, natural unevenness in hand-planed surfaces, and genuine age-related oxidisation or patina on the timber.

A classic mahogany sideboard works as a focal piece when contrasted against contemporary light walls, paired with modern abstract artwork above, or balanced with minimalist table lamps and simple ceramics.

Preserve mahogany surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and applying a beeswax polish annually. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage or veneer fading.
