Flame Mahogany

Thomas Sheraton - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany."

The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late 18th century during the reign of King George III, a bowfront sideboard is a dining room storage cabinet characterised by a convex curved front and fine timber veneers.

Craftsmen typically utilised solid oak or pine framing veneered with figured flame mahogany, accented with cast brass handles and reeded turned legs.

Authentic period pieces display hand-dovetailed drawer joinery, irregular hand-sawn secondary timbers, original lock mechanisms, and historic patina around brass hardware.

Position the piece in a dining room, hallway, or living space as an anchor storage unit, pairing its rich timber tones with contemporary artwork or neutral wall finishes.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting regularly with a dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year.
