Antique English Mid 18th Century Georgian Oak Office Bureau (Circa 1750)

18th century
Description

Here is a fine quality antique English early George II oak provincial bureau desk, circa 1750, with a comprehensive interior, in excellent condition. The bureau is in excellent working order, constructed from an applied moulded solid oak frame, with an oak fall. The fall retains the original brass hinges and original brass working lever lock (with key). The fall opens to reveal a complete and original interior, comprising of 10 internal drawers, 9 of which feature small brass handles. This also includes a secret drawer, disguised as decorative trim, situated above the third pigeonhole from the right. The interior also comprises 8 pigeon hole slots, The fall incorporates a green blind tooled leather skiver insert, ideal for use when writing letters. The fall is supported by the original two pull-out slides, with the original small brass knobs. Below the fall is a bank of four graduated drawers. The drawers are oak lined, hand dovetailed and feature old replacement brass swan neck handles and key escutcheons, along with original steel lever locks (all with working keys). The fall retains its original working brass lever lock, with working key. The bureau features clean oak and pine backboards and is raised on a moulded plinth, supported by later bracket feet.

Nominal old use marks to the top, leading edges, fall, interior and inside of drawers, but nothing significant, considering the age of the item. The bureau has been wax-polished by hand, to a professional standard, in our workshop, therefore the colour and patination are to an excellent standard. The fall opens easily with no significant warping, which is common with bureaus of this age. The interior is dry and clean, with nominal old use marks. The original brass fall hinges are in good working condition. The fall retains its original working brass hinges and lever locks, with working key. The fall incorporates a green blind tooled leather skiver insert, which is also in excellent condition. The drawers are decorated with old replacement swan neck brass handles and escutcheons. The drawers below retain the original working steel lever locks (with key). The drawers also incorporate their original oak hand-dovetailed drawer linings and oak bottoms. The drawers close flush to the frame. The bureau retains its original backboards and is raised on a moulded plinth, terminating on later bracket feet. This Georgian bureau is solid in joint and ready to use.
