Antique Farahan Runner

1900 - 1920
Description

Rare to find a runner from the Western Persia region of Farahan near Malayer, this elegant antique runner has a beautiful colour palette.  With a soft red background, with plenty of green dyes and ivory white minor borders.  With an all over Herati pattern, (a 16th century design stylised from two fish surrounding a water-lily) this classical runner is full of charm.  In amazing condition, it has been used over the last 120 years but very much looked after.

An exceptional rare antique Farahan runner, which is currently being displayed at the Chelsea Antiques Fair from 21st to 26th September.  Please contact us for an invitation.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Farahan rugs originate from the Arak region of Persia, renowned for high knot density, intricate floral designs, and durable construction developed during the nineteenth century.

These rugs are woven using hand-spun wool pile knotted onto a cotton warp and weft structure, coloured using natural vegetable dyes.

Authentic pieces feature slight irregularities in the hand-woven structure, soft dye variations known as abrash, and hand-bound selvedges without synthetic backings.

Place the runner in entryways, narrow corridors, or alongside kitchen islands to introduce warmth, geometric structure, and visual depth to hard flooring.

Vacuum gently without a rotating brush, rotate periodically to distribute foot traffic, and use a dedicated underlay pad to prevent movement and preserve the pile.
