Description

Exceptional condition and materials used in this beautiful runner. Made in the second half of the 19th century it appears to have been in a time capsule as not only is it in full pile but also the original ends and sides have survived intact too. Only a great, shining patina exists to inform you of the passing of years. Thick pile allover means another 150 years is easily on the cards for this charming tribal runner.

A myriad of animals and small flowers fills the field in a random nature while a single column of alternating 'Karadja' medallions floats through the middle. Exceptional wool and dyes.

Karadja rugs originate from the village of Karaja in Northwest Iran, south of the Heriz region. They are renowned for their geometric designs, typically featuring a repeating sequence of central medallions along a narrow runner format.

These runners are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a cotton or wool foundation. Dyes derived from natural plant sources were historically employed to produce deep navy, madder red, and saffron tones.

Authentic Karadja pieces are characterised by single-warp construction and distinctive latch-hook or geometric stepped medallions alternating along the centre field. The wool pile is resilient, and the underside shows visible hand-knotted weave structures.

A long Persian runner provides texture and historic contrast when placed in a hallway, corridor, or alongside a kitchen island. The rich geometric patterns complement minimalist contemporary decor as well as period interiors.
