Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Dutch commodes from the 18th century are characterised by shaped or bombee sides, curved fronts, and carved feet, often reflecting Continental Baroque and Rococo influences. Painted finishes were frequently applied either originally or in subsequent centuries to lighten the wood tone for regional provincial interiors.

These pieces were typically constructed using native hardwoods such as oak or fruitwood, or softwoods like pine when intended for a painted finish. Drawer linings were commonly built from oak or pine, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints and iron or brass hardware.

Authentic period commodes display signs of hand-craftsmanship, including hand-planed back boards, irregular dovetail joints, and natural wood shrinkage along panel joints. Original paint, where present, often shows layered wear, chalky textures, and fine craquelure consistent with age.

A painted commode acts as a focal textural element against neutral modern walls. It pairs well with contemporary artwork above the top surface, minimalist table lamps, or structured modern ceramics to create visual balance between old and new elements.

Dust the surface regularly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding water or liquid chemical cleaners that could lift delicate, historic paint layers. Position the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood movement and further paint flaking.
