Caucasian Derbent rugs originate from the Dagestan region along the Caspian Sea, historically characterised by bold geometric medallions, rectilinear motifs, and striking tribal iconography woven by local village weavers.

These rugs are traditionally handknotted using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation threads, often incorporating natural vegetable and insect-derived dyes that develop a rich patina over time.

Authentic pieces typically display irregular weave densities, abrash colour variations within the wool, hand-finished selvedges, and natural dye palettes rather than synthetic chemical colourants.

An antique tribal rug acts as a grounding focal point in modern spaces, pairing effectively with minimalist furniture, neutral upholstery, and architectural elements to highlight its rich colours and geometric patterns.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, professional specialised cleaning when necessary, and the use of a breathable rug underlay to prevent slippage and fibre abrasion.
