Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Armorial coats of arms originated in medieval Europe as heraldic identifiers for noble families, civic institutions, and guilds. By the nineteenth century, bronze armorial castings were widely produced as architectural embellishments, decorative plaques, and domestic accents displaying heraldic insignia.

These heraldic pieces were traditionally produced using sand casting or lost-wax casting techniques to achieve crisp detail in relief. Once cast, the bronze surface was hand-chased, patinated to a dark brown or black finish, and frequently mounted onto a hardwood plinth for display.

Authentic nineteenth-century bronze plaques exhibit fine chasing along high-relief areas, natural surface wear, and a subtle oxidisation layer within deep recessed areas. Original pieces typically show evidence of hand-finishing, appropriate weight for cast metal, and age-consistent wear on timber mounting bases.

A bronze armorial crest serves as a classic focal point when displayed on a fireplace mantelpiece, integrated into a curated bookshelf, or placed on a dark wood sideboard. Paired with minimalist stone or contemporary framed art, it creates a balanced contrast between historical structure and modern design.

Dust the bronze regularly using a soft, dry bristle brush or microfibre cloth to clean intricate relief work without scratching. To preserve the original patina, apply a thin layer of neutral microcrystalline wax occasionally and buff gently, avoiding chemical polishers or abrasive liquid cleaners.
