Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. This Victorian harlequin davenport is a Victorian desk made from burr walnut with a warm brown colour and a green leather writing surface. The piece has an elevated pop-up stationery gallery with a pierced wooden top, a sloping fall, carved scroll front supports, turned walnut drawer knobs, brass escutcheons, and turned bun feet. The timber exhibits a pronounced burr walnut veneer with visible figuring, whilst the interior reveals bird's eye maple drawers and compartments alongside a tooled green leather slope. Overall, the davenport measures 115.5 cm high, 57 cm wide, and 59.5 cm deep. Suitable for placement in a study, home office, or gentleman's library, this compact Davenport provides a dedicated writing space with integrated storage for stationery, letters, and desk accessories. The pop-up compartment and pull-out writing surface offer practical functionality for daily correspondence and paperwork, while the side drawers accommodate small documents and supplies. The freestanding design allows placement away from walls within a room arrangement, serving as a functional workspace that combines traditional Victorian craftsmanship with versatile compartments.

FAQs

A Davenport desk is a small, compact writing desk featuring a sloping writing surface above side drawers, originally created in the late 18th century.

Victorian Davenports were commonly constructed from fine hardwoods such as burr walnut, rosewood, or mahogany, often lined with hand-tooled leather writing surfaces and fitted with brass hardware.

Authentic Victorian pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on internal drawers, natural wood grain variations, authentic period locks, and original mechanisms such as pop-up stationery compartments.

Position the Davenport as a functional accent piece in a study, hallway, or living room nook, pairing its rich timber tones with neutral wall palettes and understated modern lighting.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically along the wood grain, ensuring the piece remains away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight.
