Fabulous Regency Style Hand Painted Bureau by Edwards & Roberts

This is a very rare and exquisite hand painted bureau in the Sheraton style by Edwards and Roberts which dates from around 1880. The bureau, crafted in warm mahogany, is beautifully and extensively hand painted throughout with classical garden scenes depicting dancers and musicians in a glorious garden setting. The piece features a hand painted faux line inlay and strings of harebells; the sides are wonderfully painted with urns issuing flowers surrounded by lush scrolling foliage.

The drawers are all oak lined and the bureau has its original brassware. The cylinder front and the upper drawer have working locks and keys.

This is an extremely pretty and characterful piece with great charm. It stands 95 cms high, 68 cms wide and is 45 cms deep.

Founded in 1845, Edwards and Roberts became synonymous with high quality furniture, both as cabinet makers, producing items to a very high standard using the finest timbers, and as 'Importers of Ancient Furniture'.

Their cabinet makers produced contemporary items as well as reproductions of earlier English and French pieces, favouring Georgian designs and satinwood marquetry. They were also known for adapting and restoring fine quality items worthy of their stamp.

By the late 19th century Edwards & Roberts was one of the leading firms of English cabinetmakers.
