18th Century Georgian Oak Crossbanded Bureau

18th century
Description

A superb oak crossbanded bureau dating from the mid 18th Century. It has a sloped front above two short and one long drawer, each with brass plate handles and matching escutcheons. The drawers are beautifully bordered with oak crossbanding which continues in an arch above the drawers and around the sloped front. Two pulls support the front which opens to reveal a series of small pigeon holes and drawers with beautifully shaped friezes. There is also a large well with a sliding top that hides three secret drawers below behind a concealed panel of chamfered wood. It is an excellent quality piece with panelled sides and shaped bracket feet.

It is in excellent condition for its age and the oak has developed a wonderful rich colour over the years. It has been thoroughly cleaned and gently polished, retaining the original patina. There are general signs of age and use, some old knocks, small splits and a few small repairs to the crossbanding and the bottom moulding but no major damages and the piece is strong and sturdy. The interior is in good condition with a few old surface marks and stains but nothing detrimental and some of the pull handles on the small drawers have been replaced. The dovetailed drawers open smoothly and are generally clean and tidy inside.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
