Champleve is a technique where troughs or cells are carved into a metal base, such as bronze, and filled with vitreous enamel paste before firing and polishing. In Chinese craftsmanship, this method was frequently applied to ritual vessels, planters, and decorative objects to create intricate coloured patterns.

These pieces are typically cast from bronze or brass alloys, featuring recessed compartments that hold coloured enamel pastes. The metal body is often finished with patination, while the enamel areas are ground down flush with the metal partitions and polished to a smooth finish.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural wear to the metal base, consistent oxidation within unpolished areas, and slight irregularities in the hand-applied enamel colours. Examining the weight, casting seams, and the depth of the metal chiselling helps verify age and traditional manufacturing techniques.

This type of decorative object works well as a standalone statement piece on a console table, sideboard, or mantelpiece. It can also function as a cachepot for small potted plants, adding a textural metallic element and historical depth to modern or eclectic living spaces.

Preserve the surface by dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding all chemical cleaners, polishes, or abrasive materials. Keep the object away from excessive moisture and direct sunlight to protect both the metal patina and the stability of the historical enamel.
