A superb Gillows quality George IV secretaire chest which is constructed from the finest figured mahogany. The reeded edge three quarter gallery joined to the plumb pudding mahogany top with moulded edge. The cross banded frieze flanked by well carved patrae above the applied reeded pilasters. The secretaire drawer front having applied reeded mouldings with turned pulls and opens to reveal an arrangement of 8 graduated drawers, 4 pigeonholes and retaining the original tooled leather writing surface. Below are 2 panelled doors with conforming reeded mouldings and pilasters which open to reveal 6 small cock beaded drawers to the right and 3 larger drawers to the left and all retaining the original pulls. The chest is raised on short gadrooned feet with hiden casters behind. This fine piece of early 19th.Century furniture was almost certainly made by Gillows and is in remarkable original condition retaining all the original turned pulls, brass locks and escutcheons with good mahogany linings throughout.
