John William Gilroy. (1868-1944).

Landscape, marine, portrait and genre painter in oil and watercolour. He was born in Newcastle.

He was mainly a self-taught artist setting up a practice in the 1890's. He first began exhibiting his work at the Bewick Club, and then at The Royal Academy and at The Northern Counties exhibitions at the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle from their inception in 1905 until 1940. He practiced in Newcastle until the early 1920's when he moved to Whitley Bay. Represented at The Laing A.G., Shipley A.G. and Gateshead.
