Antique Caucasian rugs originate from the Caucasus region bridging Europe and Asia, woven by various ethnic groups. They are historically renowned for their bold, rectilinear geometric patterns, saturated natural vegetable dyes, and symbolic tribal motifs.

These pieces are traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for the pile, warp, and weft foundations. Natural dyestuffs derived from plants, insects, and minerals were universally employed to achieve their characteristic deep, rich hues.

Authenticity is identified through irregularities in the geometric weave, the use of hand-spun wool with characteristic abrash (colour variation), natural dye patination, and traditional structural elements such as wool or cotton flatwoven ends.

An antique tribal rug functions as a grounding focal point in contemporary spaces, pairing effectively with neutral upholstery and minimalist furniture to highlight its intricate geometry and rich colour palette.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, professional specialist washing when necessary, and keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent fading of the natural wool dyes.
