Fine Taskent Suzani, Uzbekistan, Circa 1850, 2.43m X 2.17m

19th century
Description

Suzanis are one of the major textile art forms from the East. The embroiderers of Uzbekistan have been making beautiful suzanis (translated as 'needlework') since at least the 18th century. Very often they were made by the womenfolk of a family in preparation for a young girl's dowry, so they were made to a very high standard and endowed with great significance. They were made to be used for a variety of purposes, as bedcovers, curtains, wall hangings, table covers and other utility functions. They would adorn the new bride's home and reveal her prowess as an embroiderer and artist. Each weaving area or oasis developed its own distinctive style with slightly different embroidery techniques, dyes and designs. This wonderful piece comes from Tashkent, now the capital of Uzbekistan. It is a highly dramatic and impressive piece. The roundels represent ancient cosmological symbols and are drawn with great proportions and artistry. Note the subtle changes in the roundels, an indication of an early date for the production of this piece. Note also the use of an aubergine dye, an early dye which disappeared around the mid-19th century which dates this piece to 1850 or earlier. Very good condition. Retains original backing.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
