Cicim is a traditional flat-weaving technique originating from Anatolia, where supplementary weft threads are embroidered onto a plain-weave foundation to create raised geometric patterns. Historically produced by nomadic and village weavers in regions like Konya, these panels were often used as grain bags, floor coverings, or decorative tent furnishings.

These textiles are constructed using handspun sheeps wool for both the warp and weft foundations, dyed with natural organic colourants derived from local plants, roots, and minerals. The distinct raised ornamentation is achieved through a discontinuous supplementary weft-float technique worked directly into the loom.

Authenticity is determined by examining the handspun wool characteristics, natural dye variations, irregular tribal motifs, and structural wear consistent with age. Genuine pieces exhibit characteristic irregularities in symmetry and hand-finished selvedges distinct from modern machine-made reproductions.

These versatile panels can be mounted on a wall as textile art to absorb sound and add texture, or utilised as a durable floor covering in low-traffic areas. The rich geometric patterns complement both minimalist contemporary spaces and eclectic traditional interiors by introducing warmth and historic character.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming with a suction-only attachment through a mesh screen to protect loose fibres, alongside avoiding direct exposure to strong sunlight to prevent dye fading. Professional textile conservation cleaning should be undertaken periodically by specialists familiar with historic natural-dye carpets.
