Antique Abedeh rug with the tribal medallion design.

Circa 1920.

The rug is of a traditional tribal design with a small central medallion, the field is filled with tribal design elements such as flowers, shrubs, birds and even little human figures.

The rug is in excellent condition with even wear and medium pile.

The rug is suitable for normal domestic use.

The rug has been hand washed and is ready for use.

Abedeh rugs originate from central Persia between Isfahan and Shiraz. Their designs are strongly influenced by nearby Qashqai nomadic tribes, characterised by central diamond medallions, corner spandrels, and repeating geometric motifs like stylised flora and fauna.

These rugs are woven using a hand-knotted wool pile anchored to a cotton or wool warp and weft foundation. Natural vegetable dyes were historically employed to create deep terracotta red, indigo blue, ivory, and ochre tones.

Authentic pieces exhibit slight asymmetrical variations in the hand-knotted weave, subtle color shading known as abrash from natural dye batches, and a firm, dense pile construction visible on the underside.
