Antique Baktiari Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

A large elongated medallion design in the main field on this attractive antique Baktiari rug, this design is derived from early rug patterns produced in the 16th and 17th century.  Amazing natural dyes, with soft pale blues, greens, and reds.  The ivory centre lifts the whole palette and showcases the intricate floral designs. We have washed this rug and the colours are vibrant yet muted due to the age of this piece.  Woven around 1910-1915 the condition is very good with the ends secure and a sturdy wool pile height.

There are some 200 villages in the region of Baktiari, who all produced beautiful rugs around the late 19th century and in some quite striking designs. The garden design, as seen here is a famous design used by Baktiari weavers for centuries.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Bakhtiari rugs originate from the Bakhtiari region in the Zagros Mountains of western Iran. Woven by both nomadic tribes and settled village artisans, these textiles are historically recognised for their high durability, geometric motifs, and rich plant-based dye palettes.

These carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton foundation. Traditional pieces utilise natural dyes extracted from madder root, indigo, walnut husks, and pomegranate skins to create stable, saturated colours.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-knotted pile construction with slight structural variations visible on the reverse side. They typically feature robust double-wefted foundations, hand-bound selvedges, and slight natural colour variations known as abrash throughout the field.

A vibrant Persian rug serves as an anchor in contemporary interiors by introducing pattern and warmth. Designers frequently pair them with neutral modern upholstery, exposed timber floors, or clean-lined minimalist furniture to create visual contrast.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating beater bar to protect the pile fibers. Promptly blot spills with a clean cloth and cold water, rotate the carpet annually to ensure even wear, and utilize a quality non-slip underlay to maintain structural integrity.
