Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 19th Century French Revival twin pedestal desk is finished in black ebonised wood with contrasting gold-coloured ormolu mounts and brass inlaid decoration. The black tooled leather top is edged with bold ormolu moulding above a central kneehole configuration containing three upper drawers and two matching three-drawer pedestals, all fitted with decorative brass drawer pulls and ormolu mounts. The structure is raised on a brass-inlaid plinth with prominent ormolu decoration, while each pedestal corner incorporates figural ormolu mounts alongside delicate brass stringing outlining the drawer faces. Practical proportions measure 77 cm high, 130 cm wide, and 65 cm deep. This ebonised gentleman's library desk provides a functional workspace and storage solution suited for a traditional home study, library, or home office.

FAQs

These desks feature black-stained timber finishes paired with intricate gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts, decorative moulding, and classical architectural proportions typical of 19th-century French revival design.

Construction typically incorporates dense hardwoods stained black to imitate ebony, combined with cast and chased gilt-bronze mounts, cast brass handles, and leather or timber writing surfaces.

Authentic period examples exhibit heavy hand-cast brass or bronze mounts with crisp chiselling, gilding or gold leafing, dovetail jointed drawers, and natural wear to the dark stained finish.

Position the piece as a focal statement desk in a study or library, pairing its dark finish and polished brass details with contemporary minimalist seating and neutral wall tones for visual contrast.

Clean the ebonised timber with a dry microfibre cloth and wax sparingly, while avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners on the metallic ormolu mounts to preserve the delicate original gilding.
