Attributed to Emile a Gruppe American Impressionist (1896-1978). Oil Painting

1940 - 1960
Description

Emile A Gruppe American Impressionist 1896-1978. (Smith Cove Gloucester Harbour)

1950/60s impressionist oil painting on board of Gloucester harbour as he painted several similar paintings of different Gloucester harbour views. Also several small charcoal drawings of same. £300/£500 mark. Measures 23 x 19 inches unframed and is in good condition. Similar paintings have sold at US auctions within the last 10 years between £3000/£7000. Last 3 years some now over $20,000. All presently making well above auction estimates sometimes double the estimate, as the auction houses catch up. This is one of his better paintings, I have seen a few. These quality 20th cent impressionist paintings are a sound investment. In particular, this artist, rising fast in American auction houses now making twice the auction estimates of pre-2010 prices achieved.

Signed bottom left E.A.G Size; 23inches x 19inches Plus frame

The last image is another painting of his painted in the winter, likely sitting in the same place as it is the almost identical artists painting position, overlooking Gloucester Harbour. (Smiths Cove) We also think the dark brown boat in the background is the same boat, as this would probably be a longterm mooring berth, and painted in the same year. This one sold in an American auction for $9,000 usd

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

American Marine Impressionism gained prominence in the early 20th century, particularly within artist colonies like Gloucester and Cape Ann. The movement emphasised plein air execution, fluid brushwork, dynamic compositions of coastal activity, and the vibrant interplay of light across natural water surfaces.

Artists typically painted with oil pigments bound in linseed oil on stretched linen or cotton canvas, as well as wooden panels. Works were primed with gesso ground layers and completed with protective dammar or mastic varnishes.

Authenticity is evaluated through visible impasto application, signature analysis under magnification, correct period canvas weaving, natural craquelure patterns, and consistent surface patination or varnish discolouration on the reverse.

Position the artwork as a central focal point above a mantelpiece or sideboard, paired with neutral walls or deep navy paint tones. Picture light illumination highlights the textual impasto and undertones without creating direct surface glare.

Keep the painting in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight, dampness, and intense heat sources. Dust the surface very gently with a soft dry brush, and consult a professional art restorer for varnish cleaning or canvas tensioning.
