Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. This 19th-century French Napoleon III cabinet takes the form of an ebonised side cabinet with a breakfront shape and a contoured grey marble top. The piece measures 112 cm high, 144 cm wide, and 50 cm deep, offering surface display space and internal storage via a single front door and an interior shelf. The black ebonised wood surface features detailed gilt-metal ormolu mounts, a central red panel on the door centered with a mask medallion, and elaborate brass stringing. Visible signs of age include fine cracks to the side panels and losses to the brass stringing. The cabinet serves as an imposing focal point in a living room, hallway, or dining room, functioning well as a credenza or console for displaying ornaments while concealing household items behind its lockable door. Its rich combination of black timber, dark red tones, and glittering gold metalwork suits formal interior schemes inspired by historic European design.

FAQs

Furniture from this era frequently draws on Louis XIV revival designs, incorporating dark ebonised timber, detailed gilt-metal ormolu mounts, contrasting tortoiseshell or lacquer panels, and contoured marble tops.

These cabinets were constructed using solid timber frames veneered in ebonised wood, set with cast brass or bronze decorative mounts, integrated marble slabs, and ornamental metal inlay.

Authentic period pieces exhibit heavy, hand-chased gilt-bronze mounts with natural surface patination, traditional locks, hand-sawn carcass construction, and fitted marble tops matching the cabinet profile.

Position the piece as a focal point in a hallway, dining space, or drawing room, balancing its dark finish and metallic ornamentation against neutral walls and restrained modern lighting.

Dust surfaces regularly using a soft, dry lint-free cloth, avoiding liquid chemicals or abrasive cleaners that can damage ebonised finishes and stripped gilt coatings.
