Antique Shiraz rugs are hand-knotted wool floor coverings traditionally woven by tribal and village weavers in the Fars province of south-west Persia. Known for their distinctive geometric medallions, rich indigo blues, and rust-red hues, these textiles reflect the nomadic heritage and storytelling motifs of the Qashqai and Khamseh confederacies.

Authentic vintage Persian carpets are constructed using hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation threads, often featuring wool or cotton warps and wefts. Weavers employ hand-knotted techniques using natural vegetable and insect dyes, such as madder root and indigo, which develop a rich patina over time.

Authentication involves examining the hand-knotted pile for irregular knot counts, slight asymmetries in the geometric motifs, and the use of hand-spun wool with natural variations in dye saturation. Additionally, genuine older pieces typically feature wool foundation yarns, original selvedges, and characteristic end finishes rather than machine-bound edges.

An antique tribal rug functions well as a grounding element in modern spaces, adding texture and historical contrast to minimalist or mid-century furniture. Layering the textile over a larger natural fibre base, such as jute or sisal, helps define seating areas and highlights the rich colours against neutral floors.

Preservation requires regular, gentle vacuuming without a rotating brush roll to prevent fibre damage, alongside professional periodic washing using low-moisture methods suitable for natural dyes. Keeping the textile out of direct sunlight prevents colour fading, and rotating the rug every six months ensures even wear patterns.
