This late nineteenth-century settee takes the Hepplewhite style in dark brown mahogany, following Georgian design after George Hepplewhite. Three shield-shaped backrests feature pierced and carved splats with urn motifs and delicate decorative detail. The dark timber contrasts with the cream herringbone-patterned woven fabric on the upholstered seat. The frame includes outswept wooden arms terminating in scroll-shaped handholds and square tapered legs supporting the seat structure. Overall dimensions measure 92 cm high, 140 cm wide, and 55 cm deep. In a home today, this seating piece provides an authentic period accent for traditional interiors and classic country house aesthetic spaces. It suits placement in a drawing room, hallway, or spacious landing, offering comfortable seating for multiple guests. The compact yet elongated proportions allow the settee to fit well against a living room wall or function as a standalone decorative statement piece in a period hallway.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth, apply high-quality beeswax twice yearly following the grain, and position the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage or fading.

Place the piece in an entryway, beneath a large mirror, or at the foot of a bed to serve as accent seating, pairing its rich timber tones with neutral textiles or modern abstract artwork.

Key identification features include delicate proportions, shield-shaped backrests, Neoclassical motifs such as wheat sheaves, drapery swags, or urns, and straight, tapered or spade legs.

Original period pieces were primarily crafted from solid mahogany or satinwood, utilising traditional mortise and tenon joinery, with seats upholstered in silk, horsehair, or wool tapestry using hand-tacked webbing.

A Hepplewhite chair-back settee is an 18th-century style bench featuring two or more interconnected chair backs, most notably designed with shield, oval, or heart shapes pioneered by cabinetmaker George Hepplewhite.
