Description

An unusual late 19th/early 20th century satinwood, mahogany and marquetry inlaid bureau bookcase of small proportions.

The top section consists of a satinwood and mahogany moulded cornice leading down to a satinwood frieze with boxwood & ebony stringing.

This leads down to a bookcase/display cabinet having two doors, each with thirteen pane astragal glazed panels with key and the interior having three adjustable shelves.

The lower section consists of a superb quality satinwood and marquetry bureau, the fall having boxwood & ebony stringing to the edge with rosewood banding, the central panel of excellent quality Indian satinwood with superb inlaid marquetry decoration depicting a putto holding a tablet or plaque among scrolling acanthus and mythical birds.

The interior of the bureau consists of a mahogany fall with well fitted interior consisting of eight satinwood veneered drawers with ebony & boxwood stringing and brass knobs, shaped pigeon holes and a satinwood veneered central door having floral marquetry decoration, the inside of the door having a small drawer with secret apron drawer above.

This leads down to satinwood loopers with brass knobs and two over three graduated oak lined drawers, the drawer fronts satinwood veneered with satinwood & ebony stringing with inlaid marquetry decoration of mythical birds and scrolling acanthus. Each drawer having fine quality gilt swan neck decorative handles and central inlaid oval escutcheon leading down to a moulded edge below.

The sides consist of superb quality Indian satinwood veneer with banding, the bureau bookcase being supported on four mahogany ogee feet.

This piece is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home or office etc.
