Description

John Joseph Cotman was a key member of the Norwich School of artists. The second son of John Sell Cotman John Joseph displayed a wonderful eye for colour and was a superb draughtsman. His pictures are stylish and bear the test of time very well.

John Joseph suffered from deep boughts of depression and difficult manic episodes which stretched is family and friends to the limit. He drank heavily and sadly developed tongue cancer and had the tongue removed, which must have bee horrendous.

The painting is an exceptional example of Cotmans' work. It shows a Broadland riverside village with wherries moored at the central cottage. Whilst stock are herded to drink. Signed and dated 1877 one year before his death and a particularly difficult time in his life.
