Fine 2' George I Walnut Bureau Bookcase

19th century
Description

Wonderful small 2 foot wide George I style walnut bureau bookcase made in the 19th century. The first thing to say about this piece is that it is so good even I had to look at it twice to make sure it wasn't period. It is in fact the best 19th century copy I have ever seen. Made around the last quarter of the 19th century but using all period timbers and all traditional methods of construction. The walnut veneers used are period and are superbly grained with great patination and great mellow colour.

All the drawers are oak lined in the traditional manner with the drawer bottoms running from front to back, all the drawers have the correct type either engraved plates or brass knobs. The bureau section has a lovely stepped and shaped interior with a well. The bureau stands on nice shape bracket feet.

The top section has a single glazed door which is nicely shaped with gilded inner edge. The bookcase has a great horn shaped top which is all cross grain walnut with gilt patera. The bookcase has two fully adjustable shelves inside which have a round cross grain walnut edge.

All the mouldings on the bookcase are the traditional shape cross grain moulds. The piece retains all its original 19th century locks which are all working with keys. The piece is in good condition but does require a couple of minor veneer repairs which would be done before dispatch.

As already mentioned above this is a wonderful RARE size and is without any question the best 19th century copy of a George I walnut bookcase I have ever seen.

SIZE; 24" wide, the bureau is 18" deep, the top section is 9" deep. 81" high overall

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
