This nineteenth-century Regency sculpture depicts a classical female figure standing beside a decorative column on a rectangular pedestal. The semi-clad figure wears classical drapery and a head dress, with her hair tied back in a classical hairstyle, holding a vessel under her arm and resting against a Thomas Hope inspired classical torchere with paw feet and a fluted column. The figure's right leg is raised on the torchere base, and the entire composition stands on a decorated stepped plinth. The piece is constructed from plaster with a painted dark brown patina to simulate bronze, and shows minor surface wear including paint scuffs along the edges of the rectangular plinth. The sculpture measures 48 cm high, 19 cm wide, and 14 cm deep. In a modern interior, this piece is well-suited for display on a mantelpiece as a decorative sculptural accent. It brings a grand Regency aesthetic to a living room, study, or hallway, anchoring a mantel display or gracing a side table in a traditional setting.

During the Regency and Neoclassical periods, plaster figures were produced to emulate expensive bronze and marble sculptures from antiquity, making classical art accessible for domestic interiors.

These pieces were cast using plaster of Paris poured into multi-part moulds, then painted or patinated with dark lacquers, bronzing powders, or graphite to imitate cast bronze finishes.

Authentic period plaster figures typically exhibit crisp moulding details, natural paint wear showing lighter plaster beneath, visible seam lines, and appropriate weight for cast gypsum.

A dark classical figure provides strong visual contrast when placed on a light marble fireplace mantel, a tailored console table, or alongside art in a curated bookcase.

Dust gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaners which can soften untreated plaster or strip delicate historical painted patinas.
