Description

Good C19th Grand Tour Bronze Warwick Vase, of large proportions; the rim with an egg and dart border above trailing vine leaves and the classical masks below cast in high relief; the handles to either side being entwined vine branches, with acanthus leaves to the underside of the bowl on a moulded waisted socle and a square plinth.

A fine quality casting with a good rich patination.

This nineteenth-century Grand Tour bronze Warwick vase embodies the Neoclassical style with large proportions and a rich dark brown patinated finish. The piece rests on a square plinth base supporting a moulded waisted socle, with acanthus leaves decorating the underside of the bowl. High-relief Bacchanalian masks encircle the body, complemented by an egg and dart border and trailing vine leaves along the rim, and twisted vine branches forming handles on either side. Measuring 25 cm high, 35 cm wide, and 27 cm deep, the urn sits suitably on a sideboard top in a dining room or living area as a decorative display piece.

FAQs

The design originates from an ancient Roman marble vase discovered in 1771 at Hadrians Villa in Tivoli. During the nineteenth century, bronze cast reductions of the vase became celebrated Grand Tour souvenirs acquired by wealthy European travellers.

These decorative vessels are cast in bronze alloy using either lost-wax or sand-casting techniques. The cast pieces are subsequently hand-chased for surface detail and finished with chemical patination to achieve a dark, protective tone.
