George III Mahogany Bureau

Description

Circa 1770, good George III mahogany bureau. The flap at the front with its selected flame mahogany veneers has an escutcheon in the centre which has an oval cast brass revolving top with foliate casting around it. Inside the bureau there is a writing surface of green felt and a centre door with a mirror which opens to reveal further drawers, slides and pigeon holes. Either side of this there are columns which pull forward to open 2 secret compartments. There are further pigeon holes left and right, and all the drawers inside have mahogany liners and the original brass ring pull handles. The felt has been replaced. Below the flap there are pull out mahogany lopers with a beaded edge and turned mahogany knob handles. The front of the bureau consists of 4 full length graduating drawers which are again mahogany lined and have the original cast brass swan like handles with foliate casting. Beneath the bottom drawer there are several mouldings, then a flat fore edge and the whole piece stands on classic stylish George III ogee bracket feet. The bureau has excellent colour and patination.
