Description

A rare William & Mary late 17th century oak bureau of fine, faded patina (colour).

The bureau consists of a solid oak top with a moulded edge leading down to a solid oak fall also with moulded edge and a moulded book rest.

The fall opens up resting on two square loopers with brass knobs, the fall opens to reveal a superb stepped interior consisting of eighteen drawers.

The drawers are elaborately shaped with original brass knobs and a central open arched compartment.

The interior also has a well which conceals a secret compartment with two small drawers.

This leads down to the drawer configuration of two short over two long drawers, all oak lined with brass swan neck handles and oval escutcheons. The handles are not original as there is evidence of drop handles although they have probably been on the piece since some time in the late 18th century.

There is a moulded edge to the base and the bureau is supported by four original bun feet.

This piece is in very good original condition with evidence of some old repairs.
