Ayton Castle Burr Walnut Wardrobe and Dressing Table

19th century
Description

Circa 1870, monumental mid Victorian burr walnut wardrobe ex Ayton Castle in Berwickshire, by T.H.Filmer & Sons London. The wardrobe is framed all over with ebonised beading and carved sections of solid satinwood in the form of a foliate weave, almost like gadrooning. There are four fully relief carved, fluted and tapering burr walnut columns with solid satinwood carved acanthus leaves at the top and in the middle. At the bottom, the column is wrapped around with a barley sugar ebonised wood. The base of the columns has a carved satinwood bezel, a circular fluted column and finishes with various ring turnings in satinwood and ebony.

The wardrobe has a shaped cornice with a raised arched centre over ogee cushion mouldings. The curved side doors enclose hanging space and have a hinged cupboard at the bottom. The interiors are polished mahogany. The centre of the wardrobe has two arched doors on the top, which open to reveal a section of five mahogany front trays. Again, the inside is polished and the back is panelled. Beneath this are three long graduating drawers, the solid ebony knob handles with a carved satinwood flower in the centre. Inside the top drawer, which is sycamore lined, is the makers label. All standing on an enclosed plinth. The wardrobe is exhibition quality, excellent colour and condition. There is also a matching dressing table available included in the price.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A breakfront wardrobe is a large piece of bedroom storage furniture featuring a central section that projects forward beyond the flanking side wings. Crafted during the nineteenth century using burr walnut veneers, these pieces combine hanging space, fitted shelves, and chest drawers into a unified design.

Victorian breakfront wardrobes typically feature solid timber frames finished with book-matched burr walnut veneers. Construction methods include hand-cut dovetail joints on internal drawers, polished brass hardware, carved wooden mouldings, and solid oak or pine secondary drawer linings.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-saw marks on unfinished rear panels, natural oxidisation of internal timber, and irregularity in the grain of hand-cut veneers. Original locks, brass escutcheons, and smooth hand-planed drawer runners also signal period authenticity.

A large breakfront wardrobe functions as a central architectural feature in primary bedrooms or dressing rooms. Pair the piece with neutral wall tones and understated modern textiles to balance its substantial visual scale and detailed woodwork.

Dust surfaces regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth along the grain. Protect the walnut veneer from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent warping, and apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually to maintain humidity levels within the timber.
