French Walnut Cylinder Bureau

Description

Circa 1880, fine quality French walnut cylinder bureau, the long rectangular top with green marble enclosed in a finely ribbed brass bezel and a wrap around open fretwork brass gallery. Beneath this is a concave shaped facing on the front and back which has herringbone pattern veneers with wonderful ormolu mounts of Bacchus heads and various foliate castings. The cylinder with a massive foliate casting in the centre, 2 stylish cast brass handles and a wonderful escutcheon. This opens to reveal a simple fitted interior of 3 drawers with string inlay and a pull out felt writing surface which is crossbanding and string inlay around the edge. When this is pulled out it reveals 3 further dummy drawers. The main drawer beneath the writing surface is smothered in mounts of swags and tails and has a very elaborate escutcheon and a cast brass key. On each side of the drawer are further floral castings, and the sides of the desk are again covered in swags and tails with musical instruments above. The whole piece stands on 4 crossbanded square tapering legs with cast brass capitals and ormolu mounts at the top on all 4 sides, finishing on a cast rectangular cup. The piece is freestanding and of wonderful quality.
