Driscolls Antiques Ltd has dated this piece to the 1750s.
The moulded cornice displays dental moulding and sits above two glazed doors with cross banding and astragal glazed panels, the doors having a key with working lock. The interior of the bookcase contains three adjustable shelves. Between the top bookcase and bureau base can be found two pull out candle support slides.......maybe even the Georgians sat at their desk working late into the night?? The bureau itself consists of a moulded fall front, being richly figured, which when opened reveals an interior displaying a small central cupboard and several small drawers and pigeon holes. It also contains two secret slides which flank the cupboard and have reeded fronts. The base has four graduating oak lined drawers with magnificent brass Rococo period handles and key escutcheons. This truly delightful piece stands on shaped bracket feet and displays a wealth of charm and character only found in a genuine antique. It splits into two sections for ease of removal and has aged to a warm mellow shade of mahogany with a striking grain, good patina, is in very good condition and has been beautifully cleaned using a traditional form of wax finishing.
