18th century
Description

An exceptional and beautifully proportioned George III mahogany bow front chest of drawers, dating to circa 1790, displaying the finest quality cabinetmaking, elegant Hepplewhite influences and the timeless sophistication of late 18th-century English furniture.

Constructed with a solid mahogany carcass, the chest features a beautifully shaped bow front, giving it a wonderfully graceful appearance. The quality of the mahogany and the refinement of the construction reflect the skill and attention to detail of a highly accomplished Georgian cabinetmaker.

Of particular interest is the practical brushing slide, an elegant and useful feature traditionally associated with fine Georgian bedroom furniture, providing an additional surface when required.

The drawers are beautifully constructed with solid oak linings and finely executed hand-cut dovetail joints, demonstrating the precision and craftsmanship of the period. All drawers run smoothly and freely, offering generous and practical storage while retaining their original character.

The chest retains its original brass handles, which beautifully complement the rich mahogany and add considerably to its period appeal.

Raised on wonderfully elegant splayed Hepplewhite-style legs, the chest has a beautifully light and refined appearance, with the graceful bow front and delicate leg design creating an exceptionally pleasing balance of proportions.

The mahogany displays a lovely depth of colour and rich, mellow patina, highlighting the natural beauty of the timber and the quality of the original cabinetmaking.

A truly outstanding example of late George III English furniture, combining exceptional craftsmanship, elegant design and everyday practicality.

This George III mahogany bow front chest of drawers, dating to circa 1790, is a Georgian piece executed in solid mahogany with oak-lined interiors. The design incorporates a shaped bow front, a pull-out brushing slide positioned above three long graduated drawers, and splayed Hepplewhite-style legs. The timber displays a rich dark brown colour and a mellow patina, complemented by original brass oval swing handles fitted to each drawer front. It measures 86 cm high, 107 cm wide, and 60 cm deep. In a home today, this chest provides functional storage in a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway. The top surface offers display space, while the pull-out slide supplies an additional horizontal surface when needed. The compact footprint and refined proportions allow it to integrate into both traditional country house settings and contemporary interiors while maintaining its late 18th-century English character.

FAQs

George III furniture, spanning 1760 to 1820, is recognised for balanced classical proportions, restraint in ornamentation, and high-quality mahogany timber. Cabinetmakers during this period emphasised functional elegance, introducing curved bow-fronts and fine brass drop handles.

The exterior primary wood was predominantly Cuban or West Indian mahogany, valued for its dense grain and rich tone. Secondary woods used for internal drawer linings and back panels typically included pine, oak, or deal.

Authentic period chests exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed timber backings, and original iron locks with brass escutcheons or oval plate handles. Smooth runner wear along the drawer bottoms and natural shrinkage gaps in secondary woods are standard indicators of period construction.

A Georgian chest of drawers provides a grounded anchor in contemporary rooms when set against light neutral walls or textured lime plaster. Pairing the rich mahogany wood tone with modern abstract art or minimalist ceramic vessels creates a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Dust surfaces regularly with a dry, soft cotton cloth and apply a high-grade natural beeswax polish once or twice a year along the grain. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, radiators, and extreme changes in relative humidity to prevent timber movement or finish degradation.
