Late 17thc Oak Moulded Front Chest of Drawers with Faded Patina

17th century
Description

A late 17th century (circa 1680) oak moulded front chest of drawers with fine, faded patina.

This oak chest of drawers consists of a three plank top with a moulded edge leading down to four long drawers.

The top drawer with moulded decoration to give the appearance of two smaller drawers, the drawer below of deeper proportions with geometric moulded decoration, drawer three and four replicating the designs of drawer one and two, all drawers with brass drop handles and decorative central brass escutcheons.

The sides with panelled ends with a moulded edge below, all supported on stile feet.

This chest of drawers was made in two sections, the top lifts off the lower section which is not uncommon for pieces of this period as cottages and properties were small so this made moving items through small staircases and upper floors easier.

This chest of drawers is in very good condition for age with evidence of old repairs, it is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.

This late seventeenth-century Jacobean chest of drawers originates from the English Country House tradition, constructed from warm brown oak with brass hardware and finished with a faded patina. The piece displays a three-plank top, geometric applied mouldings, panelled sides, and split construction supported on stile feet, accompanied by brass drop handles and decorative central brass escutcheons showing evidence of old repairs. Measuring 81.25 cm high, 90.25 cm wide, and 57 cm deep, the chest provides practical storage capacity for everyday belongings. Suitable for placement in a bedroom, hallway, or living area, the chest integrates easily into traditional interiors while serving as a functional surface and storage unit. The stable construction allows the piece to be placed directly into a home setting without additional preparation, while the two-section format preserves historical construction methods typical of the period.

Chests of drawers from the late 17th century often feature raised geometric mouldings applied to drawer fronts, panelled sides, and joinery construction methods typical of the Carolean and Jacobean periods. These pieces marked a transition from traditional lifting-lid coffers to dedicated drawer storage.

Primary construction utilised solid English oak, frequently paired with pine or oak secondary timber for drawer linings. Drawer fronts were decorated with applied oak mouldings, while handles were generally brass drop pulls resting on stamped flowerhead backplates.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-sawn timber marks, wooden peg joinery, and drawer construction featuring side-runner grooves or thick drawer sides with early dovetails. Additionally, early chests often divide into two sections to facilitate transport.

Position the chest as a focal point against a neutral backdrop to highlight the geometric drawer mouldings. Pair the piece with contemporary artwork or refined lighting to create a balanced contrast between historical textures and modern design.

Maintain the original surface by regularly dusting with a dry, soft cloth and applying a clear beeswax paste once or twice a year. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and cracking.
