Antique Thai Rattanakosin Bronze Standing Buddha Double Mudra 19th Century 56cm

19th century
Description

A substantial antique Thai bronze standing Buddha, probably dating to the Rattanakosin period in the 19th century, and measuring an impressive 56cm high.

The Buddha is depicted standing upright upon a double lotus pedestal with both hands raised in a characteristic double teaching / protection gesture, related to vitarka and abhaya mudra. This distinctive standing form became particularly associated with Thai Buddhist sculpture and is also found elsewhere in mainland Southeast Asia.

The figure has an elegant elongated form with a smooth monastic robe falling from the left shoulder, elongated earlobes, tightly curled hair and a pronounced ushnisha rising above the head.

The face is serenely modelled with downcast eyes and a calm meditative expression, while the hands are carefully articulated with symbolic finger positions.

The bronze displays a rich dark brown-black patina with lighter wear to projecting areas and small patches of green oxidation in protected recesses. Close examination reveals casting porosity, hand-finishing marks, scratches and surface irregularities consistent with traditional lost-wax manufacture and considerable age.

The figure is hollow cast, with an open underside retaining darkened deposits, oxidation and historic casting residue. A small amount of loose material can be heard within the hollow body when moved, consistent with internal casting-core residue or other historic deposits; this has been left entirely undisturbed.

At approximately 2.5kg, the weight is entirely consistent with a substantial hollow-cast devotional bronze of this scale.

Origin: Thailand

Period: Rattanakosin

Date: Probably 19th century, circa 1850–1900

Material: Bronze / copper alloy

Construction: Hollow cast

Subject: Standing Buddha

Gesture: Double teaching / protection mudra, related to vitarka / abhaya

Height: Approx. 56cm

Minor wear and losses are present to projecting areas including the hands, robe and hair. The underside remains open and retains historic deposits and casting residue. No obvious major structural break is apparent from inspection of the photographs. Please examine all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.

A substantial and highly decorative example of 19th-century Thai Buddhist bronze sculpture, with strong spiritual presence and excellent display scale.

This nineteenth-century Rattanakosin period standing Buddha sculpture is cast from bronze with a dark bronze finish. The figure stands upright on a lotus pedestal base with both hands raised in a double abhaya mudra gesture, and features an ushnisha topknot, elongated earlobes, and a monastic robe falling from the left shoulder with a draped fold. The metal surface exhibits lighter wear on projecting areas, small patches of green oxidation in recesses, casting porosity, scratches, and hand-finishing marks. Measuring 56 cm in height, the sculpture weighs approximately 2.5 kg. It is suited for placement on a sideboard top in a living room, hallway, or study.

Originating in Bangkok during the late eighteenth century, the Rattanakosin style features stylized, elongated figures with intricate garments, tight hair curls topped by a flame-like usherisha, and expressive hand gestures known as mudras.

These sculptures were predominantly created using the lost-wax (cire perdue) bronze casting method, often filled with a clay core and occasionally gilded or lacquered following completion.

Authenticity is evaluated through cast seams, the texture of the internal core residue, sign of genuine age patina, and historical alignment of the facial expression and robe drapery with established period conventions.

Position the figure on a clean-lined wooden sideboard or dedicated plinth to allow the silhouette and deep patina to contrast against neutral wall tones.

Maintain the surface by light dusting using a dry, soft microfibre cloth; harsh chemical polishes and liquid cleaners should be avoided as they alter the original patination and surface oxidisation.
