George II Walnut Bureau with Stepped Interior Circa 1730

18th century
Description

A charming George II walnut bureau of lovely warm colour and rich patina, dating to circa 1730.

This George II walnut bureau from circa 1730 is constructed from warm brown timber with a rich patina and displays a slant-front writing slope above four graduated drawers fitted with ornate pierced brass drop handles and matching escutcheons. The piece rests on shaped bracket feet and features visible grain patterns and signs of age across the mellowed surface. It measures 101 cm high, 91 cm wide and 51 cm deep, with the height at the fall measuring 77 cm. In a contemporary home, this antique desk serves as a practical writing workstation or display surface in a study, home office, or living room, offering enclosed storage within its drawers while maintaining a traditional aesthetic.

A George II bureau is a slant-front writing desk produced during the reign of King George II (17271760). These pieces typically feature figured walnut veneers, a sloping fall-front opening to a fitted writing interior, multiple graduated drawers below, and shaped bracket feet.

Primary construction utilised walnut, often as veneers over pine or oak carcasses to display rich grain figure. Hardware typically consisted of cast brass backplate handles and keyhole escutcheons, with hand-cut dovetail joints securing the drawers.

Authentic period bureaux feature hand-sawn secondary timbers, irregular hand-cut dovetail joints, original iron lock mechanisms, and uneven surface patination consistent with natural aging. Looking at the undersides and backs of drawer linings helps reveal historical woodworking techniques.

A Georgian bureau serves as a functional focal point in a home office, library, or living room. Pairing warm timber tones with contemporary artwork or neutral textiles creates an intentional contrast between historic craft and modern design.

Preserve walnut furniture by maintaining stable ambient humidity levels to prevent wood shrinkage or veneering cracks. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft cotton cloth, and avoid direct exposure to sunlight or radiators.
