Antique Sheraton Revival Painted Satinwood and Cane Side Cabinet

1900 - 1920
Description

A particularly charming and unusual early 20th century satinwood side cabinet of exceptional decorative appeal, beautifully proportioned and displaying a delightful combination of finely painted floral decoration, intricate woven cane work and elegant curved shelving.

The beautifully figured golden satinwood top is surrounded by a striking dark green border, delicately decorated with colourful flowers and trailing foliage. This wonderful decorative treatment continues across the front of the cabinet, creating a harmonious and highly attractive appearance.

The central cupboard is enclosed by a pair of beautifully detailed doors, each incorporating an unusual shaped opening filled with intricate woven cane work arranged in an attractive radiating pattern. The surrounding satinwood frames are embellished with further painted foliage, scrolling tendrils and decorative green motifs.

Of particular interest are the elegant curved open shelves to either side, which follow the beautifully shaped outline of the cabinet and provide an attractive space for displaying decorative objects, books or ceramics.

The central cupboard opens to reveal a spacious interior with a full-width shelf, providing useful and practical storage.

A wonderfully decorative and versatile piece of furniture, combining the elegance of Sheraton Revival design with the charm of early 20th century craftsmanship. Equally suited to a drawing room, hallway or dining room, where its unusual form and beautiful painted decoration would make a delightful focal point.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Fine satinwood veneers with painted floral banding: favourite Edwardian and 1920s revival decoration.
Sunburst cane door panels: complex hand weaving popular in early twentieth-century cabinetwork.
Slender butt hinges: standard fittings for early twentieth-century cupboard doors.
Gentle surface rubbing along plinth and edges: honest wear from domestic use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Sheraton Revival furniture originated in late Victorian and Edwardian England, reproducing the late 18th-century Neoclassical designs of Thomas Sheraton. Key characteristics include straight lines, slender proportions, fine veneer timbers such as satinwood, and delicate hand-painted floral motifs or marquetry inlays.

Pieces from this era typically feature West Indian or East Indian satinwood veneers over pine or oak frames. Decorative elements incorporated hand-painted gouache or oil enamels, alongside woven rattan cane panels, brass cabinet hardware, and mahogany or rosewood crossbanding.

Authentic pieces display fine dovetail joinery, smooth hand-applied painted ornamentation showing slight age-related crazing, and genuine natural timber grain beneath the finish. The underside and backboards usually reveal period construction methods, such as hand-sawn timber and aged brass fittings.

A painted satinwood cabinet acts as a refined accent piece in hallways, living rooms, or dining areas. Pairing its light golden timber and intricate decoration with modern neutral walls, contemporary ceramics, or minimal artwork creates an elegant contrast.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth, avoiding chemical sprays or water that could damage hand-painted details. Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the satinwood veneer from bleaching and the natural cane panels from drying out.
