This Victorian jardiniere originates from 1860 and follows an English Country House style. The piece takes the form of a round brass planter rendered in a warm gold colour with a polished metallic finish. Rich embossed repoussé decoration wraps around the body, depicting trailing grapevines, detailed bunches of grapes, and broad leaves. Further ornamental details include cast lion mask ring handles attached to opposing sides and four small claw and ball feet elevating the bowl from surfaces. The rim incorporates stepped mouldings above the main decorative frieze, while subtle surface patination shows the natural aging of the metal over time. Measuring 20 cm high, 44 cm wide, and 28 cm deep, the container has substantial proportions suited for interior display. Placed on a wooden sideboard top or a large console table, the jardiniere functions as an ornamental planter for floral arrangements or indoor foliage within living spaces, studies, or reception rooms.

During the Victorian era, indoor gardening gained immense popularity among the rising middle classes. Jardinieres served as decorative outer containers designed to conceal utilitarian clay plant pots while preventing water runoff onto polished wooden furniture.

Victorian brass jardinieres were typically crafted using sheet brass formed into circular or oval shapes, often embellished with repousse relief work pressed or hammered from the reverse side. Handles were cast separately in heavy brassfrequently depicting lion masksand riveted onto the main body alongside cast metal feet.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples display signs of hand-finishing, such as subtle variations in the repousse work, heavy cast components, and visible interior seams or copper rivets. Natural oxidisation and age-related wear in recessed areas of the metalwork also help verify period manufacture.

A brass jardiniere functions effectively as a focal centerpiece on a sideboard, dining table, or mantelpiece. It can house modern potted house plants such as ferns or orchids, or simply serve as an unplanted decorative brass container.

To preserve the historical integrity, dust the metal regularly with a soft dry cloth. Avoid abrasive chemical polishes that strip away age-acquired patina, and ensure the interior is fitted with a waterproof liner if displaying live plants requiring water.
