This Victorian aneroid ships barometer from around 1885 presents a warm brown solid English oak case of circular form. The turned frame incorporates a carved rope twist border surrounding a polished brass bezel with a glazed viewing window, a brass reading marker knob in the centre, and an integrated brass hanging loop at the top and bottom. Set beneath the glass is a white porcelain dial featuring black lettering with weather predictions, a sunburst or central rosette motif, and the maker name Wilson, Gillie, Bruce & Sons Cardiff, along with an aneroid movement positioned behind the face. Measuring 18 cm high, 18 cm wide, and 6.5 cm deep, the instrument suits placement on a narrow wall space in a study, library, hallway, or maritime-themed interior. It functions as a wall-mounted timepiece and weather predictor that brings traditional Victorian maritime design to domestic spaces.

An aneroid ships barometer is a maritime instrument that measures atmospheric pressure using a small, sealed metallic capsule that expands or contracts with weather changes. Invented in the mid-19th century, these instruments became standard equipment aboard sea vessels due to their durability and lack of liquid mercury.

Antique barometers typically feature solid timber casings such as oak, mahogany, or walnut. Internal and external components were crafted from lacquered brass, with porcelain or enamelled steel dials protected beneath heavy glass face covers.

Authentic maritime barometers often bear retailer or maker inscriptions on the dial face, alongside weather markers such as Stormy, Rain, Fair, and Very Dry. Additional indicators include heavy-gauge brass bezels, solid brass hanging fixings, and hand-carved details on the wooden casing.

Mounting a wall barometer in a study, library, hallway, or gallery wall creates an engaging focal point. Pair it alongside framed architectural prints, brass sconces, or dark timber joinery to complement classic and transitional interiors.

Dust the timber casing regularly with a soft cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the oak. Wipe the glass and brass bezel gently with a dry microfibre towel, avoiding moisture near the dial mechanism.
