Antique Mid-victorian Mahogany Writing Table C.1860

19th century
Description

A mid 19th century mahogany writing table, the rectangular solid top with a stepped moulded edge, set over a pair of flush-fronted figured drawers with cast brass rosette handles, all raised on turned tapering legs.

Executed in the disciplined and rather understated neoclassical taste that endured in some British workshops well into the mid-nineteenth century. None of the heavy ornament typical of its era, in favour of clean lines and practical utility.

Very good antique condition, displaying attractive sun-mellowed colour to the top alongside light surface wear, soft historic indentations, and localised lifting to the side rail veneer. Structurally sound throughout, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1860.

Mid-Victorian writing tables typically featured symmetrical proportions, smooth rectangular tops, frieze drawers for storage, and turned or ring-moulded legs reflecting 19th-century British cabinetmaking standards.

Cabinetmakers during this era predominantly utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, and walnut, frequently finishing drawer interiors with secondary softwoods like pine and fitting them with turned wood or cast brass handles.

Authentic 19th-century writing tables usually display hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original timber contraction marks on the underside, period-correct brass locks, and natural patination consistent with age.

An antique writing table can function as a compact home office desk, a hallway console table, or a dressing table when paired with contemporary seating and modern lighting.

Preservation requires keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage, dusting regularly with a microfibre cloth, and applying a quality beeswax polish along the wood grain.
