The Animalier movement emerged in 19th-century France, focusing on the realistic depiction of animals and birds in bronze. Artists aimed to portray wildlife with anatomical accuracy and naturalistic detail rather than purely classical symbolism.

These sculptures were typically produced using the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand-casting methods. After casting, the cold bronze was hand-chased to refine surface details before chemical patinas were applied using heat.

Authentic pieces exhibit crisp, hand-finished detailing in the plumage and base, along with natural wear to the patina on raised areas. Cast signatures and foundry marks are usually integrated into the mold rather than stamped afterwards.

Place the sculpture on a wooden desk, mantelpiece, or bookshelf alongside leather-bound volumes or framed botanical prints. The dark metal surface provides visual weight and contrast against contemporary or neutral backdrops.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft brush to clear intricate crevices. Avoid liquid cleaners or polish; a light coat of microcrystalline wax applied annually will protect the original surface patina.
