Description

Mid 19th Century Swedish Birch Chest Of Four Straight Drawers

This very elegant chest of drawers is crafted from solid Scandinavian pine & beautifully veneered in birch. The top & sides feature figured birch, while the drawer fronts are finished in striking Karelian birch, known for its distinctive grain & rich character. The chest comprises four straight drawers, each opening with a key in the traditional Swedish manner & fitted with bone escutcheons. (Although completely original in that the drawers open with a large key, we are happy to fit a sympathetic set of handles at cost should that be preferred).

The chest is detailed with a moulded top edge & stands on classic block feet, giving it a well balanced appearance.

Fully restored & wax polished, the chest is presented in showroom condition. All drawers run smoothly & it is clean throughout ready to be placed & enjoyed in any setting.

A mid-19th-century Swedish Biedermeier chest of drawers made from solid Scandinavian pine with satin and Karelian birch veneers in a honey blonde colour. The piece presents four straight horizontal drawers accented with diamond-shaped white bone keyhole escutcheons, a moulded top edge, and a plinth base. A wax-polished finish highlights the distinctive flame birch grain pattern across the front surfaces. The dimensions are 97 cm high by 99 cm wide and 47 cm deep. Practical for everyday storage, this chest of drawers fits naturally into a bedroom, hallway, or living room. The warm timber tones and clean Scandinavian lines complement both traditional and modern interiors while providing substantial surface space on top for lamps, mirrors, or decorative objects.

Mid-19th-century Swedish storage furniture from the Biedermeier and Karl Johan periods is characterised by clean architectural lines, functional symmetry, and the prominent use of figure-grained native timbers, particularly satin birch or flame birch.

These chests were constructed using solid pine for the internal carcase, drawer linings, and back panels, faced with cut veneers of flame or satin birch timber. Keyhole escutcheons were frequently crafted from carved bone or mother-of-pearl.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, original pine backing, hand-planed timber surfaces, and natural age-related oxidisation in the drawer interiors, alongside distinct diamond or oval bone keyhole surrounds.

The light golden tone and geometric profile of birch furniture pair well with neutral linen textiles, contemporary monochrome artwork, or minimalist ceramic decorative pieces to create a balanced, modern rustic scheme.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer cracking or uneven fading. Dust regularly with a clean, dry cloth and apply a quality natural wax polish annually to nourish the wood surface.
