A rare country oak chest of drawers from Suffolk or Norfolk. Like many of this type of chest, it had once been cut in half to allow it access up narrow flights of stairs. It has since been firmly reattached. The top has lovely re-entrant corners typical of the 1730's. All the drawers run smoothly and have had professional attention. The period handles are later and probably only the first replacements. It is a fine looking chest of drawers with good colour and lovely proportions. Dimensions 82cms wide x 49cms deep. Height 102cms

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Chests produced during this era, particularly in East Anglia, often feature straight-fronted oak construction, graduated drawer arrangements, and modest decorative moulding along the frieze or top edge.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from solid native English oak, featuring hand-dovetailed pine or oak drawer linings alongside cast brass drop handles.

Authentic examples exhibit hand-sawn timber marks, wide dovetail joints, original backboard construction, and age-appropriate oxidisation around the original drawer hardware.

Position the piece as a focal point in a hallway or bedroom, styled with contemporary artwork, minimalist ceramic vessels, or simple table lamps to create a balanced visual contrast.

Apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year along the grain, keep the surface clear of direct moisture, and position the item away from intense radiator heat to prevent timber shrinkage.
