This nineteenth-century Italian sculpture depicts a recumbent lioness resting on an integral rectangular stone base in a neoclassical style. Carved from grey Carrara marble by the artist Carrasco, the piece features detailed facial carvings, including a distinctive textured muzzle, and a weathered surface patination showing small imperfections and sympathetic repairs to the front right paw and back right edge. Measuring 46 cm high, 72 cm wide and 45 cm deep, the sculpture is displayed on a light grey cubic plinth standing outdoors on a patch of green grass in front of a red brick wall topped with a decorative balustrade and bordered by climbing foliage. The grand Regency design vibe makes this sculpture suitable for placement in a formal garden, park, courtyard or estate grounds.

Recumbent lioness sculptures depict a crouching or resting female lion, traditionally symbolising power, vigilance, and protection within classical architectural and garden design.

Classical animal statues are typically hand-carved from natural marble or limestone, or cast in lead, bronze, and stone composition designed to withstand outdoor weathering over centuries.

Authentic carved marble statues display subtle hand-chiselling marks, organic variations in surface texture, and natural weathering or lichen growth from long-term exterior exposure, unlike uniform composite moulds.

This style of sculpture serves as a dramatic architectural focal point positioned along garden paths, beside entrance thresholds, or elevated on a stone plinth within a grand hallway.

Marble statuary should be washed gently using clean water and a soft-bristled brush, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, and protected or sheltered during extreme freeze-thaw cycles to prevent moisture cracking.
