Antique Victorian Mahogany Chaise Longue C.1860

19th century
Description

A mid 19th century mahogany chaise longue upholstered in a pale sage sprig-patterned fabric, the sweeping back and rolled headrest deeply buttoned and accented by carved scroll cresting, set over an open gallery arm of turned spindles topped by a matching padded rest above an elongated sprung seat with continuous moulded rail, all raised on turned legs fitted with large smooth running brass and ceramic castors.

Very good antique condition, with light surface wear and historic patination across the mahogany consistent with age. Structurally sound throughout, with the upholstery clean and ready to place in the home.

This mid 19th-century Victorian chaise longue is made from dark brown mahogany with a pale sage green sprig-patterned fabric upholstery. The sweeping back and rolled headrest display deep button tufting and carved scroll cresting, alongside an open gallery arm with turned spindles. Beneath the elongated sprung seat runs a continuous moulded rail, supported by turned legs on brass castors that show light surface wear and historic patination. The item measures 92.5 cm high, 195 cm wide, and 63 cm deep. Position this piece in a drawing room or study to provide an elegant resting spot, or place it at the foot of a bed in a master bedroom. The clean fabric and structurally sound frame allow for immediate placement in traditional or country house interiors.

Originating in the 19th century, a Victorian chaise longue is an elongated upholstered seat designed for reclining, typically featuring an asymmetrical raised backrest and carved timber framework.

Mid-Victorian examples were built using solid mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, constructed with mortise and tenon joinery, hand-tied coil springs, horsehair padding, and buttoned fabric upholstery.

Authentic 1860s pieces feature hand-carved timber details, turned legs on brass castors, traditional webbed construction, and evidence of original joinery beneath the upholstery frame.

Place the chaise longue beside a large bay window or at the foot of a bed to create a dedicated seating area, balancing the dark timber frame against neutral modern walls.

Dust mahogany frames regularly with a soft cloth, apply natural beeswax along the grain annually, and position upholstered seating away from direct sunlight to reduce fabric fading.
