A Victorian standard measure made from heavy gauge solid brass exhibits a polished golden finish across its conical body, flared funnel rim, and twin loop handles. Detailed engravings across the surface include the text "1 GALLON" and "East Riding of Yorkshire", alongside official maker marks from De Grave & Co, London. The piece measures 33 cm high, 26.5 cm wide, and 26.5 cm deep. Suitable for display in a gentleman's library or study, this item sits appropriately on a sideboard top or desk. The functional design integrates handles for carrying and a collar for pouring, establishing an interesting focal point for a collection of historical metalwork or antique scientific and domestic instruments.

Victorian standard liquid measures were official imperial volume gauges used by inspectors of weights and measures to verify trade accuracy in local markets and businesses.

Official measures were primarily constructed from heavy brass, bronze, or gunmetal to prevent corrosion, ensure dimensional stability, and withstand frequent verification testing.

Authentic measures typically feature engraved volume denominations, official verification stamps or cyphers, local authority markings, and maker names alongside precise heavy-gauge metal construction.

Display the piece as a standalone sculptural vessel on a sideboard top, bookshelf, or mantelpiece to add warm metallic tones and historical texture to contemporary or traditional interiors.

Dust regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and polish lightly with a specialised brass cleaner, avoiding harsh abrasives that could erode delicate historical engravings or verification marks.
