Seascape Oil Painting of Fishing Boats Off a Harbour by William Calcott Knell

19th century
For Sale by Benton Fine Art
Description

William Calcott Knell

British, (1830-1880)

Fishing Boats in a Stiff Breeze

Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1877

Image size: 7.5 inches x 15.5 inches

Size including frame: 11.75 inches x 19.75 inches

A fine marine oil painting of fishing boats off a harbour in a stiff breeze by William Calcott Knell. To the centre right of the painting, two fishermen can be seen on the deck of a large, brown-sailed fishing smack. As they haul in their nets, a rowing boat passes alongside containing two other fishermen seemingly unfazed by the choppy water. Meanwhile other boats sail in and out of the busy harbour. The topography and skyline is similar to that of Great Yarmouth which Knell is known to have painted views of.

William Calcott Knell was a painter of marine scenes who was born in Lambeth, Surrey in 1830. He was the oldest child of the marine artist William Adolphus Knell (1805-1875) and his first wife Susannah Ann McKirdy. His younger half-brother Adolphus Knell (b.1849 fl. 1860-1880) also became a seascape artist. He lived with his family at Highgate Hill in Lambeth and was most likely taught art by his father, as their style and subject matter bear similarities. His mother died in 1841 and his father remarried in 1846, later moving the family to Rose Cottage in Highgate Rise.

Knell specialised in seascapes usually featuring fishing boats off the English coast and painted in both oil and watercolour. He made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1848, from Rose Cottage with ‘French fishing boats off Broadstairs’. He also exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists and the British Institution.

He married Maria Church on 27 March, 1859 at St Mary’s Church, Lambeth. The couple moved to George Street, Lambeth where their first child Eliza was born in 1860. By 1871 he had moved to Gordon Terrace off Strahleven Road where he lived for a number of years. He died at Camberwell in 1880 and was buried at Abney Park Cemetery, Stock Newington, where his father was also buried a few years prior.

A number of his works can be found in art galleries and museums, including the Beecroft Art Gallery, Ferens Art Gallery, The Fitzwilliam Museum, Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Harris Museum and Portsmouth Museum.

Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.

Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.

This Victorian marine art oil painting dates to 1870 and depicts sailing vessels and a small rowboat on choppy coastal waters. The artwork is executed in oil on canvas, finished with a gold and blue palette, and is set within a moulded gilt frame featuring a brass nameplate at the lower edge. The composition captures fishing boats off a harbour under a cloudy sky. The physical dimensions measure 30 cm high, 50 cm wide, and 6.5 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this piece suits placement above a sideboard in an English country house interior. The work serves as a focal point in a living room, dining room, or hallway. The frame provides a structured presentation that complements traditional interior schemes, hanging securely on a wall to introduce maritime history into domestic spaces.

Nineteenth-century British marine painting is defined by its detailed depiction of naval ships, fishing vessels, and coastal scenes, capturing atmospheric conditions, sea movement, and light with high visual accuracy.

Victorian artists typically painted with oil pigments applied to stretched linen canvas or wood panels, presenting the finished work inside heavy wooden frames finished with gold leaf or plaster mouldings.

Authentic paintings from this period often display natural surface craquelure, period-appropriate canvas stretchers, original gilt frames, and brass artist nameplates or signature details consistent with nineteenth-century techniques.

A classic seascape can be hung above a sideboard, fireplace mantel, or desk to introduce visual depth, framing it as a central focus within contemporary or traditional schemes.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and heat sources. Dust the frame gently with a soft dry brush and consult a professional conservator for surface cleaning.
